10th Annual Civil Engineering Competition

The Georgia Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is holding its 10th Annual Civil Engineering Competition, and I’m hoping that your students and your school will participate! This is a tremendous opportunity for students to learn about the engineering sciences and civil engineering as a profession while they create a project and compete for cash prizes.

The competition basically challenges middle school students (6th, 7th, and 8th graders) to tell us “What DO Civil Engineers Do?” This can be in the form of an essay, project, video, or even piece of related art – it’s up to the student or team. The teams can be no greater than 3 members. Cash prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for each grade level. The top winners will be presented with the award at the ASCE Georgia Section lunch meeting held on Friday, May 5th, 2017 at the Carlyle House in downtown Norcross. The deadline for submission is April 1st, 2020.

The Georgia Section specifically has targeted this age group because there has been a decline of engineers entering the work force in the U.S. and that trend is not expected to improve. However, Money Magazine’s 2011 Best Jobs lists Civil and Environmental Engineers as the #4 and #10 best jobs in fast-growth fields in America! Sadly, many students these days still do not know what engineers (much less civil engineers) actually do. Therefore, introducing your students to the civil engineering profession will not only promote it as an interesting and rewarding career, but help fill the anticipated and current void at a time when our infrastructure is aging and in desperate need of repair.

We look forward to working with you on this exciting and FUN opportunity.
